Dental Implants: Tooth Implant Cost & Treatment

Dental implants are permanent artificial tooth roots used to replace a missing tooth or teeth while helping to stop or prevent jaw bone loss. Dental implants also can be used to hold dentures securely into place.

Dental Implant Procedure

Dental implant procedures are classified as a form of prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry and a type of cosmetic dentistry. In addition to enhancing the overall appearance of your smile, dental implants are the most functionally effective, strong and durable treatment option available for missing teeth, so you can eat your favorite foods without any hassle.

Dental Implant Materials

Dental implant restorations consist of a titanium material screw and a crown, or an overdenture. The connection between the dental implant and your bone enables the dental implant to be practically indistinguishable from surrounding teeth. Implants generally are placed in one appointment but require time to osseointegrate, a process by which the dental implant and the jaw bone join together. The most commonly used and successful type of dental implant are osseointegrated implants.

Implant Candidacy

To determine if you are a candidate for implants, see your dentist, oral surgeon and/or periodontist or prosthodontist for a thorough teeth and gum examination. Oral health issues such as gum disease, tooth decay, burning mouth, oral thrush, TMJ disorder, etc. must first be treated before implantation can be considered.

Your dentist also will evaluate the quantity and density of your jaw bone. X-rays and computer tomography scans (CT scans) are used to ensure sufficient bone structure and determine where the implant should be placed. Your dentist will determine a dental implant treatment plan to meet your needs based on the condition of your gums and jaw bone, other oral tissues, oral hygiene and personal habits.

Dental Implant Recovery

Depending on your specific implant treatment, recovery can take as long as six months, while fitting and seating the crown(s) can take as long as two months. Once implants are placed, it is important to maintain diligent oral hygiene habits to ensure proper fusing of the implant and bone. Properly maintained implants can last as long as 40 years or longer.

Dental Implants Cost & Insurance Coverage

The cost of tooth implants can be affected by a number of things, including the location in which treatment is performed, the dentist performing the procedure, the type of implant, whether or not you have dental insurance (some cosmetic treatments like veneers and teeth whitening may not be covered by insurance), and more. Dental implants are one of the more expensive restorative dental options, ranging in cost from approximately $1,000 to $5,000 per implant. Compare this with the cost dental bridges, dentures or even the cost of veneers per tooth.
